  The cheongsam is a female dress with distinctive Chinese features and enjoys a growing popularity in the international world of high fashion.

  The name "cheongsam," meaning sim* "long dress," entered the English vocabulary from the dialect of China's Guangdong Province (Cantonese). In other parts of the country including Beijing, however, it is known as "qipao", which has a history behind it.

  When the early Manchu rulers came to China proper, they organized certain people, mainly Manchus, into "banners" (qi) and called them "banner people" (qiren), which then became loosely the name of all Manchus. The Manchu women wore normally a one-piece dress which, likewise, came to be called "qipao" or "banner dress." Although the 1911 Revolution toppled the rule of the Qing (Manchu) Dynasty, the female dress survived the political change and, with later improvements, has become the traditional dress for Chinese women.

  Easy to slip on and comfortable to wear, the cheongsam fits well the female Chinese figure. Its neck is high, collar closed, and its sleeves may be either short, medium or full length, depending on season and taste. The dress is buttoned on the right side, with a loose chest, a fitting waist, and slits up from the sides, all of which combine to set off the beauty of the female shape.

  The cheongsam is not too complicated to make. Nor does it call for too much material, for there are no accessories like belts, scarves, sashes or frills to go with it.

  Another beauty of the cheongsam is that, made of different materials and to varying lengths, they can be worn either on casual or formal occasions. In either case, it creates an impression of simple and quiet charm, elegance and neatness. No wonder it is so much liked by women not only of China but of foreign countries as well.

  The second robot is Jack. It has a round face, two small eyes and a big mouth. It can dance very well, it can play the piano quite well, and it can skate well. Jack likes ma-ki-ng friends with people, animals, trees and flowers, even air. Listen! Jack is playing the piano! Oh, that’s very good. Everyone likes it.

  The last one is Dick. It’s the cutest than Peg and Jack. It can teach me how to live, and it can help me play, relax and learn new things!

  The robots can teach me many things, they can make me happy, they are fun, I like it!

  China, our great motherland, is developing very fast. More and more techniques are being used into our daily life. Well, let's imagine what our future will be like in 50 years.

  First, there will be more trees but lepollution. It's very important for us to protect our living environment. However, some people are destorying it only because they want to fullfill their selfifh purpose-to get more and more money. We are being told that it's wrong to bulid our happineon the sufferings of our descendants. So, I think we should do something to change the present situation. And now our goverment is trying to solve this problem, and some relevent policies will come into force very soon.We could expect a bright future for our environment.

  Second, much more advanced technologies will be used, which will provide us much more convinence. After 50 years, we will have our own robots help us with the housework, and the life will become easier and more comfortable. When you are free, you could fly to the moon for vacation or fly rockets to the moon. Everything is possible.

  Last but not the least, I'd like to say that we could predict the future, and I believe with our continuous efforts, all of our dreams will come true one day. Do you agree with me?

  someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. i don’t know who wrote these words, but i’ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. we are all in the position of the farmers. if we plant a good seed ,we reap a good harvest. if we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

  Ladies and Gentlemen: My topic is Honesty.

  As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. This is a true story.

  65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure.

  In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragon’s mouth.

  He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 2002, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.

  When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was dee*** touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error.

  Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of my friends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character.
